MP Rachel Boyack visits Nelson Vets
Nelsons Labour MP Rachel Boyack spent the morning with us to check out our laparoscopic surgeries, SPCA animal care, and introduce us to her lovely pup Archie! Here is what she had to say:
"Today is World Vet Day! On Wednesday Archie and I visited the team at Nelson Vets in Stoke to learn more about what they do to look after pets and animals in our community.
During our visit I got to see a laparoscopic spay of a gorgeous wee dog in action. This procedure is far less invasive and will see the dog back in action able to run and swim in just a couple of days. It was awesome to observe the team in action and see how much they care about the animals they look after.
One of my concerns as Labour’s animal welfare spokesperson is the large increase in puppies in parts of New Zealand because we have so many dogs that haven’t been desexed. It was good to talk to the team at Nelson Vets about some of the policy I’m looking at to help fix this problem.
Veterinary services are an important part of our communities and contribute to our economy. Recent research published by Boehringer Ingelheim found that 70 per cent of veterinary professionals in New Zealand believe the scope and impact of their work is not fully recognised, a sentiment that rises to 88 per cent among veterinary nurses. This year’s World Veterinary Day serves as a timely reminder of the essential, and often underappreciated, role the veterinary profession plays.
Thanks to Brendan and the team at Nelson Vets for the informative visit, and a big thanks from Archie for all the treats!"
