A guide to dental cleaning

Your vet has recommended that your pet undergo a dental scale and polish procedure – but you may have questions. Why is it necessary? What exactly happens during this process? Is it similar to our own dental visits? And what care does your pet need afterward? These are common questions, and we're here to provide answers and shed light on the importance of pet dental care.

Why Clean Your Pet's Teeth?

Did you know that 85% of adult pets suffer from dental disease? Dental disease including gingivitis and periodontitis is painful and left untreated, this can lead to worsening pain, tooth loss, and even more severe health issues affecting the heart, liver, and kidneys. Much like in humans, bacteria form a biofilm on pets' teeth, leading to plaque buildup, gum inflammation, and eventually, tooth loss. By cleaning this plaque away through regular dental care, we can minimise the risk of tooth loss and maintain your pet's oral health. In this way, a scale and polish is providing both treatment and prevention.

We require an examination of your pet's mouth under anaesthesia to accurately assess their oral health. While awake, we can only make superficial judgments about their teeth and gums.

Following the oral examination, we proceed with thorough cleaning of your pet’s teeth, addressing both above and below the gum line. Our dental instruments allow us to remove hardened plaque and treat the tooth enamel to help prevent future buildup.

To ensure your pet's safety throughout the procedure, we follow these steps:

  • Perform a pre-anaesthetic exam to ensure your pet is safe to undergo anaesthesia
  • Perform in-house bloodwork to assess your pet's organ health including liver and kidneys
  • A qualified vet nurse will monitor your pets vital signs, such as breathing rate, heart rate, temperature, anaesthetic depth, blood oxygen level, and blood pressure.

With your pet under anaesthesia, we perform a thorough dental assessment. First all of the teeth will be x-rayed to fully assess the tooth roots and identify any issues.  The plaque is removed using an ultrasonic scaler so we can see the whole tooth and gums, and any gingival pockets identified. Any teeth that are identified as needing extracted will then be removed, and gum sutured over the top of the socket.

Once your pet is awake and ready to go home, we provide any necessary take-home medications and detailed care instructions.
